WebLalibela in the Amhara region of Ethiopia is home to 11 churches cut into the volcanic tuff bedrock, including Beta Giyorgis, carved in the 12th century. One of the newer churches in the region, Dagmawi Lalibela is located 40km from the town. It is the work of Gebremeskel Tesema, a priest and hermit who started work on the site in 2011.
