WebWalter Tull – 1914 – 1918, The War Years Walter travelled down from Northampton to London, on 21 st December 1914, to enlist in the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). He was reported to be the first Northampton Town player to do so. He joined the 17 th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, commonly known as the Footballer’s Battalion. WebOn 25 March, 1918, Walter Tull was killed by machine-gun fire while trying to help his men retreat. Walter was such a popular man and several of his men risked their own lives in an attempt to retrieve his body under heavy fire but they were unsuccessful due to the enemy soldiers advance.
