In a world governed by this principle, humans and non-human entities exist and are recognisable as good and true to the extent to which they are useful. WebThe Barnesian definition of performativity evokes the self-fulfilling mechanism described by Robert K. Merton: “The self-fulfilling prophecy is, in the beginning, a false definition of the situation evoking a new behavior which makes the originally false conception come true” (Merton Reference Merton 1948, p. 195).
